Belgium has announced an expanded military support package for Ukraine that includes the transfer of seven F-16 fighter jets this year, with officials also signaling the possible handover of its entire F-16 fleet in the coming years.
Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken outlined the plan ahead of a NATO ministerial meeting in Brussels, saying the country is significantly increasing its commitment compared to earlier pledges.
According to him, the delivery will include both operational aircraft and jets intended for spare parts. “On Ukraine, we're stepping up even more on the help. We will help them by delivering seven F-16s this year. So there will be seven F-16s this year – four for spare parts and three to operate in the skies of Ukraine to defend Ukraine against Russian aggression,” Francken said.
Belgium had previously committed to supplying only four non-operational aircraft for parts, with initial delivery timelines set for 2025–2026 but repeatedly delayed.
Francken stressed the value of providing combat-ready aircraft, noting their effectiveness against Russian aerial threats, including drones and cruise missiles. He also indicated that further deliveries could follow.
