According to Nwapa, the late police officer allegedly threatened to “waste” activist and socialist campaigner, Soweto, during the protest.
Human rights activist, Francis Nwapa, has reacted to the death of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Khan Salihu of the Lagos State Police Command, saying the late officer would be remembered for allegations of repression against protesters and an alleged threat to kill human rights activist Hassan Taiwo Soweto.
Salihu, who was in charge of Finance and Administration at the Lagos State Police Command, died on Monday, June 15, 2026. The Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed his death in a statement.
He was said to have complained of feeling unwell after returning from the mosque on Sunday and requested a leave of absence to rest at home. He was, however, rushed to the hospital shortly after, where he was pronounced dead.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Nwapa recalled the January 28 anti-eviction protest in Lagos, during which DCP Salihu, who served under the former Lagos Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, was accused by demonstrators of violently suppressing peaceful protesters.
