A case of child abandonment is under investigation.

A 32-year-old father is expected to appear in court following the opening of a child abandonment case after his three-year-old daughter was found alone on the Sea Point promenade on Youth Day, Cape Argus reported.

Police confirmed that the man was arrested after the child was discovered wandering unaccompanied along the beachfront. The matter is being investigated in line with the Children’s Act.

MEC for Social Development Jaco Londt said the department had intervened to safeguard the child and that the case had been referred for a full child protection investigation.

“The department is aware of the matter and has safeguarded the child concerned.
