US President Donald Trump on Wednesday expressed confidence in Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh after the central bank left interest rates unchanged at its latest policy meeting, marking a notable shift from his earlier criticism of the Fed's leadership, Reuters reported. The Federal Reserve kept benchmark interest rates steady while updated projections showed that nearly half of policymakers believe another rate increase may be warranted later this year.Speaking in France, Trump refrained from criticizing Warsh, unlike his frequent attacks on former Fed Chair Jerome Powell over the central bank's reluctance to cut rates. During Powell's tenure, Trump repeatedly argued that lower borrowing costs were necessary to support the housing market, strengthen economic growth and reduce the federal government's borrowing costs, Reuters reported.Although Trump acknowledged that another interest rate hike remained a possibility, he suggested he was comfortable relying on Warsh's judgment on monetary policy. Reuters reported that Trump's comments reflected a more conciliatory approach toward the new Fed chief, whom he appointed last month.Following the policy announcement, Warsh declined to provide any indication of the future path of interest rates during his post-meeting press conference. He also avoided commenting on whether he had spoken with President Trump since assuming office. However, Warsh confirmed that he has maintained regular contact with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, noting that weekly meetings between the Federal Reserve chair and the Treasury secretary are a longstanding institutional practice. Reuters reported that the two have already met several times since Warsh took office, with this week's meeting skipped because Bessent is travelling overseas.During his Senate confirmation hearing earlier this year, Warsh had indicated that while the Federal Reserve would remain independent in setting monetary policy, he intended to work closely with the administration on non-monetary policy matters.
