Brigadier Campbell Nyuswa, head of Serious Organised Crime in KwaZulu-Natal, suggested the November 2021 burglary at the Hawks’ Port Shepstone storage facility that led to the theft of 541kg of cocaine worth R200 million was staged.
KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head for Serious Organised Crime Brigadier Campbell Nyuswa told the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Wednesday he was skeptical the November 2021 burglary that led to the theft of 541kg of cocaine worth R200 million at the Hawks’ Port Shepstone storage facility was genuine, suggesting it may have been staged.
This was because the landlord of the Port Shepstone building allegedly told him the safe housing drugs seized from the Durban Harbour could not be accessed without keys or by any other means.
Nyuswa said: "I must state that when I observed the scene I was shocked that the safe had been breached but more than that I was skeptical that the safe had been breached by grinding the door.
I would have expected the DPCI (Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation) investigators to have investigated the possibility that the scene was staged and obtained an expert opinion on whether the cutouts that were observed could have indeed resulted in the safe being breached. To date, I am not aware of any such report being obtained by the investigators."
