Acting Social Development Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga said extensive consultations have since been held with key stakeholders since the Basic Income Support policy was presented to the Cabinet in November 2024.

The Department of Social Development is aiming to go back to the Cabinet to submit the Basic Income Support (BIS) draft policy for approval before it is taken for public consultation before the end of March next year.

This happens as the department is scheduled to meet with the National Treasury on the funding for the long-awaited Basic Income Support policy.

Acting Social Development minister Sindisiwe Chikunga said on Wednesday the department first presented the draft policy to Cabinet on November 26, 2024.

“Cabinet directed that further work be done to strengthen the policy, including renaming the instrument and sharpening the policy rationale to foreground its development, developmental dimensions, and its links to economic opportunities,” Chikunga said.
