President Donald Trump offered a positive assessment of his administration’s negotiations with Anthropic on June 17, 2026, telling reporters at the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, that talks with the AI company are “going fine.”
The comment came after a G7 session focused on artificial intelligence, where Trump engaged with global leaders and AI executives, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.
How we got here
In February 2026, the administration ordered federal agencies to stop using Anthropic’s technology entirely. The company was designated a “supply chain risk,” a label that effectively turned it into a pariah across government procurement channels.
By April, Trump characterized earlier rounds of negotiation as “very good” and floated the possibility of a Department of Defense deal. That never materialized publicly.
