Luka Modric, Croatia’s iconic captain and one of the most decorated midfielders in football history, was substituted during his country’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Group L match against England on June 17, 2026.
The 40-year-old, approaching his 41st birthday, was replaced by Mateo Kovacic in the 58th minute of the contest.
A living legend winds down
Modric’s most celebrated moment against England came in the 2018 World Cup semifinals, when Croatia eliminated the Three Lions on their way to the final.
Rumors have circulated that Modric is considering retirement after the 2026 tournament. There has also been speculation about a potential return to Real Madrid in a non-playing capacity, following his season with AC Milan.
