Bulgarian parliamentary groups strongly condemned the arson attack on the Bulgarian Embassy in Skopje, describing it as a serious violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and an act driven by hatred. The statements were delivered in parliament, with lawmakers framing the incident as both a diplomatic security breach and a broader political signal about rising tensions with North Macedonia.
Reading a declaration on behalf of Progressive Bulgaria, Deputy National Assembly Chair Ivan Angelov said the attack represented a direct assault on Bulgarian statehood and must be treated as a hate crime. He also warned about its wider consequences, particularly for Bulgarians in North Macedonia.
“We express our deep concern about the impact of this attack against Bulgaria on the Bulgarian community in North Macedonia and on the ability of Macedonian Bulgarians to freely and confidently uphold their identity,” Angelov said.
The group called on Skopje to fully meet its obligations under bilateral and international agreements, ensure security for Bulgarian diplomatic missions, and prevent any attempts to downplay or distort the motives behind the incident. It also urged authorities to intensify efforts against hate speech targeting Bulgaria and to stop what it described as sustained anti-Bulgarian narratives in public discourse.
