The presiding magistrate, Halima Wali, ordered that Saidu be detained for 14 days and fined N100,000, describing his conduct as highly inconsiderate and a threat to public health.

A Nigerian man, Mohammed Saidu, has been sentenced to two weeks in prison and fined N100,000 after residents of his neighbourhood in Kano State complained that he stored dozens of bags of human faeces outside his home, creating an unbearable stench and posing a health risk.

According to the BBC, Saidu was arraigned before a magistrate court in Kano after environmental authorities received complaints from residents over the offensive odour emanating from his property.

The presiding magistrate, Halima Wali, ordered that Saidu be detained for 14 days and fined N100,000, describing his conduct as highly inconsiderate and a threat to public health.

Saidu, who reportedly works as a septic tank emptier, is believed to have been storing the waste for sale to farmers who use human faeces as fertiliser, a practice said to be common in parts of the region but rarely discussed publicly.
