A suspended Toronto lawyer who filed documents filled with “false and misleading” information generated by artificial intelligence has been ordered to pay $31,150 to the Law Society in what appears to be the largest AI-related cost award by a Canadian court or tribunal.

Ontario’s Law Society tribunal ordered the payment to “emphasize the harm done by irresponsible use of artificial intelligence,” which, in this case, cost the legal governing body “time, cost and effort.”
