Money has been part of the Floyd Mayweather persona for two decades, but the boxer’s latest monetary move has him in legal hot water. Mayweather is facing two felony charges for passing a bad check to purchase a $200,000 watch in Las Vegas, per court filings.
In late April, Clark County prosecutors filed a criminal complaint against Mayweather, according to ESPN, which broke the story Tuesday. Mayweather was not present at his initial hearing Monday that officially charged him with “theft, value $100,000 or greater” and “draw or pass check with intent to defraud, value $1,200 or greater.”
The charges stem from a December 2024 purchase of a $200,000 Audemars Piguet watch from Gold and Beyond, a Las Vegas resale boutique. The complaint says Mayweather knowingly did not have the funds in his account to cover the payment. Nevada state law asserts Mayweather could face up to four years in prison, per ESPN.
Attorneys for Mayweather and for Gold and Beyond did not immediately respond to requests to comment.
Mayweather made an estimated $1.16 billion since he turned pro in 1996 after the Atlanta Olympics. He ranks 10th among the highest-paid athletes of all-time with inflation-adjusted career earnings of $1.57 billion; Michael Jordan is No. 1 at $4.5 billion.
