South Africa is stepping up its fight against illicit trade

South Africa is intensifying efforts to combat illicit trade as government agencies, including the South African Revenue Service (SARS), step up coordinated enforcement operations amid growing concerns over the economic impact of illegal goods.

SARS recently seized goods valued at an estimated R245 million during operations across parts of the North West province. More than 170,000 items were confiscated in raids conducted in Rustenburg, Brits, Marikana and Hartbeespoort.

The revenue service said the crackdown forms part of ongoing efforts to curb smuggling, counterfeit goods and tax evasion. It added that several businesses have been flagged for further investigation as authorities move to dismantle illegal supply chains.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has previously said that illicit and counterfeit goods are damaging the economy, destroying jobs and undermining local businesses.
