The commission chief used the G7 to pitch Americans on the benefits of working with Europe
In a speech at the ongoing G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, on Wednesday, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen appealed to US President Donald Trump and American tech leaders, urging them to work with the EU on artificial intelligence.
The summit comes just days after Trump’s administration ordered Anthropic, a leading American AI lab, to block foreigners from two of its flagship AI models. The move has led to much handwringing across the EU over the need to make the continent more technologically sovereign, amid fears it could be shut out of access to the most advanced frontier tech.
But during a Wednesday meeting with G7 leaders and the heads of several large AI companies, including Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Mistral’s Arthur Mensch, von der Leyen seemed more focused on getting as close to American tech as possible.
“It is in our mutual interest that our citizens and companies can safely use the best AI models. We are ready to deepen our cooperation on AI,” she said.
