Police escort two schoolgirls after they were found during school hours along the Durban beachfront.
Durban authorities have raised concerns about a growing truancy problem after schoolchildren were found loitering on the beachfront, frequenting taxi ranks and bus terminals, and engaging in risky behaviour during school hours.
The Durban Metro Police Service (DMPS) and the Verulam Business Forum have warned that learners are increasingly exposing themselves to potentially dangerous situations while absent from school.
According to DMPS spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu, officers have recorded a noticeable increase in the number of learners found along Durban's beachfront during school hours.
“Of particular concern is that more female learners are being identified in these incidents,” he said.
