Authorities say the illegal trade of crayfish at the Hibberdene offramp on the N2 continues to operate as motorists stop to buy.

The long-running trade in crayfish sold along the N2 near Hibberdene will continue for as long as motorists keep buying from roadside vendors, according to authorities involved in protecting KwaZulu-Natal's coastline.

The Coastal Marine Task Force (CMTF) has warned that the visible roadside trade, familiar to many travellers on the province's south coast, is part of a sophisticated network that has operated for decades despite repeated law enforcement interventions.

Officials say public demand remains one of the biggest obstacles to shutting down the illegal market.

"This topic, understandably, keeps coming up, and as role players in coastline management, it is regularly directed towards us for answers. We have attempted to tackle this challenge head-on, but it is a complex issue that has existed for decades," a CMTF spokesman said.
