Austria opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory over Jordan at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on June 17. Romano Schmid, an own goal from Jordan’s Yazan Alarab, and a stoppage-time penalty from Marko Arnautovic did the damage for the Europeans.

What happened on the pitch

Austria controlled the Group J contest at key moments, with Schmid opening the scoring and Alarab’s own goal extending their lead. Jordan didn’t go quietly, though. Ali Olwan netted what became a historic moment: Jordan’s first-ever goal in World Cup competition.

Arnautovic put the exclamation point on the result in the 90th minute plus 12, converting from the penalty spot to make it 3-1.
