The process of lawyers submitting requests to support the prosecution in the 2023 Tempi railway disaster trial began Tuesday, after the court ruled who would be allowed to attend the trial.
The first request concerned the forwarding of the trial minutes to the Supreme Court investigating judge who handled the case of former transport minister Kostas Karamanlis, whom Parliament indicted for the misdemeanor of breach of duty in connection with the accident, that killed 57 people.
The prosecutor recommended that the request should be rejected because the forwarding of minutes is not provided for at this stage of the procedure, although it can be done after the evidentiary process has begun.
The prosecutor also proposed that the court rejects the request of lawyer Zoe Konstantopoulou, who represents relatives of victims and an injured person, for the submission of the correspondence between former transport minister Kostas Kyranakis and the State Legal Council on the statement of support for the accusation by the Greek State. A previous request by Konstantopoulou on the same matter had also been rejected by the prosecutor.
Following the proposal, the representative of the State Legal Council stated that the statement of support for the accusation had no ulterior motive and that there had been “no instructions from any minister.” The representative said the head of the State Legal Council had issued instructions for the move.
