EU body in charge of planned AI gigafactories sets out sums, timelines, sovereignty details
The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, an EU body for high-performance computing, on Tuesday laid out long-awaited details for AI compute hubs known as gigafactories, confirming earlier Euractiv reporting on the structure of the Commission’s flagship digital infrastructure project.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled plans for the gigafactories early last year as part of a European push to build out AI-focused data centres, essential for training and running AI models. Euractiv previously reported that the EU had switched its plans from building five hubs of the same size to four smaller and three larger ones, which will be built in stages.
Anders Jensen, head of the EuroHPC JU, confirmed on Tuesday during a call with private companies interested in building the gigafactories that the first phase of construction will be financed from the EU’s current multi-annual budget, which expires next year.
“This is money that’s secured, it’s here with the JU,” he said.
