Thomas Tuchel has promised that he will not “overdo” motivation going into the start of England’s World Cup campaign.England play Croatia in Dallas on Wednesday and Tuchel said that the players do not need any extra “emotional fuel” to remind them of the high stakes as one of the pre-tournament favourites.Tuchel is confident in the commitment of his players and what they have showed him so far, so does not feel the need to say or do anything to push them even further.“We always try to raise the level,” Tuchel said, “but the level is already very high, on and off the pitch. Both levels are very high. So if I had a wish now, I would like to just keep it, not overdo it. I don’t know what kicks in and when it kicks in before the match. We’re in a very, very good spot, so I have full trust that we can compete on the highest level. I don’t want to overdo it.”There is no point, in Tuchel’s mind, in looking too far ahead beyond Group L. “The focus now is on the group stage,” he said. “I don’t want to get carried away and make it bigger than it is, because tension will grow naturally once we arrive on the matchday and the stadium. And of course it’s a big match against a strong opponent. I think all of this will come, and needs no extra fuelling at the moment.”Nor will Tuchel be rallying the players by reminding them that this is a World Cup, and for many of them — and him — the first World Cup of their careers.
