England got their World Cup campaign off to a flying start by beating Croatia 4-2 in Dallas and Thomas Tuchel was delighted by the impact of his substitutes, whose role he has emphasised19:00, 18 Jun 2026Thomas Tuchel wants his England stars to buy into a rugby mentality to become finishers.‌Tuchel says his substitutes’ bench can be just as important as the starting XI when it comes to winning matches at the World Cup. The “finishers” tag has become a popular tactic in rugby when replacements are sent on to win the game in the closing stages when the opponent is already worn down.‌England did it to great effect in their World Cup opener against Croatia when wingers Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka came on to inflict the knock-out blow. Supersub Rashford scored a late goal with Saka providing the assist while two other subs, Morgan Rogers and Djed Spence, were involved in the build-up.‌Saka and Rashford might usually expect to start games in major tournaments but Noni Madueke and Anthony Gordon got the nod before both being replaced. It is a tactic which worked to great effect and Tuchel admits that it was very deliberate - and England are planning to do it again through the tournament.England boss Tuchel said: “Yes. Always. All four of them. The level they were competing against each other was at the highest level, especially in the last week in training. We had some 10 against 10s in training and some finishing patterns, some attacking patterns, some defensive patterns.Get the latest World Cup 2026 news in your inbox with our Make Football Great Again newsletter‌“Everyone is on but on in such a respectful way that we had some tough decisions to make but they know we will need them and the time will come when the others will start. The time will come when they can finish and be decisive from the bench at any time.“It is now four more weeks and in four weeks you can swallow it and digest it and buy into it. We selected the group because we were sure that they could do it and they all can.”It is an interesting dynamic. Madueke won a first-half penalty and was one of England’s better players. Gordon was quieter but is better defensively. Would they make such an impact from the bench if they had been the subs?‌Saka and Rashford were both outstanding after coming on and they really won the game for England as their extra quality shone through. Rashford made a brilliant finish while Saka’s decision-making, passing and speed really livened up England when they needed to up a gear to put the game to bed.Tuchel said: “I think that is the only way. We are so strong from the bench and I was so impressed with everyone in the friendly against Costa Rica because they pushed on the buttons and pushed on the gas and kept suffocating the opponent.‌“We needed this quality against Croatia to bring it over the line. It is just, I think it is a normal thing to do. I know they are all starters. So it is new for them but they also know it is a period of time that is so special and they know and they buy into this idea that we do it as a team.”That is the squad game which Tuchel has been talking about because - especially in the searing US heat and conditions - it is impossible to think of many players who can start and finish every game.Article continues belowSaka has been nursing an Achilles issue but Tuchel says the Arsenal winger is now nearing full fitness and he is eager to start. Tuchel added: “Bukayo is ready and will get more and more ready. I think once we go to the last game of this group he will be ready. He was strong in training in small spaces. It was just a matter of if the game was open and he was up and down.”Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
