NEW YORK CITY: Since taking up his post as the UN Population Fund’s representative for Palestine in 2024, Nestor Owomuhangi has visited Gaza several times. What he encountered there has left a lasting impression.

One conversation in particular still haunts him.

A woman he met in Gaza told him she had lost her husband, her children and dozens of other relatives during the war. In total, she said, 50 members of her extended family had been killed.

When he asked who was caring for her, she replied: “No, no, I’m taking care of an additional extended family of more than 10 of my family members.”

Then came the question he says he has never forgotten.
