Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has transformed the image of the national team. For this reason alone, he deserves greater respect and recognition from the public.
Following Bafana’s opening match loss to co-host Mexico in the ongoing Fifa World Cup 2026, Broos faced significant criticism. Detractors lamented his defensive approach, pointing specifically to his decision to field seven defensive-minded players.
The criticism reached such a fever pitch that many labeled his tactics cowardly. This is not the first time the coach – often referred to as 'Madala' – has faced backlash; critics even called for his dismissal following a disappointing Africa Cup of nations campaign earlier this year.
However, the players’ trust and affection for Broos remain strong, and they feel his contributions in recent years are often overlooked. Consequently, goalkeeper Ricardo Goss has spoken out, insisting that the coach deserves more respect.
