During the match between the national teams of Iran and New Zealand at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, images released by photojournalists and media reports indicated a widespread presence of “Lion and Sun” flags among a segment of the spectators. This scene unfolded in the stands despite FIFA’s strict ban on bringing unofficial flags into stadiums.
According to reports, a group of Iranian spectators booed and jeered during the playing of the national anthem, while another group chanted along and cheered for the national team. Meanwhile, a section of the crowd holding Lion and Sun flags displayed conflicting reactions at different points of the match, ranging from cheering for the Iranian team to celebrating goals scored by New Zealand.
The stadium atmosphere highlighted a stark polarization among the Iranian spectators in attendance. While some fans actively supported the national team after kickoff, others took to social media to report that they were cheering for the opponent’s goals.
In a separate report, Reuters wrote that the match was less a purely sporting event and more a reflection of the deep political and social fractures within the Iranian diaspora - divisions that were visibly manifested throughout the game and across the stadium stands.
