The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has strongly condemned the assault and alleged attempted sexual attack on a 70-year-old woman at Sundarayya Nagar in Payakapuram here. The CPI(M) State secretariat member Ch. Babu Rao described the incident as a shocking reflection of the growing fear faced by women and senior citizens and blamed the unchecked spread of ganja-related criminal activities for the deterioration of law and order.According to CPI(M) leader, the elderly woman was attacked and injured by a miscreant allegedly under the influence of ganja near Sundarayya Nagar embankment during late night. The accused reportedly attempted to sexually assault her, triggering fear and concern among residents, especially women living in the locality, he said.A CPI(M) delegation led by Mr. Babu Rao visited the elderly woman and her family on Tuesday to express solidarity and support. Party leaders B. Ramana Rao and C.H. Srinivas also interacted with the local residents, who raised concerns about inadequate security and poor infrastructure in the area.Speaking to the media, the CPI(M) leader termed the attack “inhuman and deeply disturbing”. They alleged that despite repeated assurances from authorities, vulnerable sections such as women, children and senior citizens continue to face serious safety threats. The leaders further claimed that ganja-related crimes were increasing across several localities and criticised the government for failing to curb drug networks effectively.The party demanded the immediate arrest of the accused, installation of streetlights and CCTV cameras in vulnerable areas, and stronger action against drug suppliers. CPI(M) leaders also urged the government to improve public safety measures and address long-pending housing concerns of poor families living along Sundarayya Nagar embankment.
