The CPI(M) demanded stringent action against police personnel allegedly involved in assaulting Adivasi tribals, destroying crops, and harassing women at Buttayigudem mandal in Eluru district. In a memorandum submitted to Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha on Wednesday, CPI(M) State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao and Central committee member D. Ramadevi alleged that police, along with revenue officials, attacked tribal families in Inumuru village on December 22. They said the incident took place in the Scheduled Area of the district, raising serious concerns over violations of constitutional safeguards meant for tribal communities.According to the CPI(M) leaders, 57 tribal (ST-Koya) families have been cultivating 42.77 acres of government wasteland in survey numbers 221, 223, 210, 213 and 217 for generations under podu cultivation. Despite repeated requests for land titles, the issue remains unresolved and is currently pending before the Amaravati High Court. Even though the matter is sub judice, revenue and police officials have repeatedly harassed the tribals, they alleged. In the memorandum, they claimed that police destroyed standing maize crops using tractors and assaulted protesting tribals, leaving several injured. A tribal man identified as Chandrasekhar reportedly sustained serious injuries, while women were allegedly beaten and forcibly driven away. CPI(M) leaders accused local police of acting under the guise of “protection orders” issued in favour of non-tribal landholders from other districts. They further alleged that such incidents have become frequent in the region, citing similar actions in nearby villages across Buttayigudem and Jeelugumilli mandals. It accused the authorities of ignoring Government Order Ms. No. 1049 (2007), which bars police intervention in land disputes in Scheduled Areas.Terming the actions discriminatory and unconstitutional, the CPI(M) leaders demanded immediate disciplinary action against the erring police officers and strict enforcement of laws protecting tribal land rights in Fifth Schedule areas.
