Anthropic, one of the most prominent AI companies in the world, has shut off access to its most advanced models for every customer, including paying US subscribers. The reason: a Trump administration directive ordering the company to block foreign nationals from using those systems.
The June 13 directive specifically targeted two of Anthropic’s newest models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5. Rather than attempt to selectively filter out foreign users while keeping US customers online, Anthropic chose to disable the models entirely.
What happened and why it matters
The directive traces back to an executive order signed by President Trump on June 2, which established a framework for pre-release vetting of advanced AI systems. The order reflected growing concerns within the administration about cybersecurity threats and potential gaps in how AI companies control access to their most powerful tools.
Eleven days later, the administration turned that framework into a specific demand aimed at Anthropic. The company was told to ensure no foreign nationals could access Fable 5 or Mythos 5, full stop.
