An election to fill the U.S. House of Representatives seat formerly represented by Eric Swalwell will be held on Tuesday, June 16. It comes just two weeks after Californians voted in the gubernatorial primary election that once saw Swalwell as an early frontrunner. The special primary election is for California’s 14th Congressional District in Alameda County, which is part of the San Francisco Bay Area.Swalwell resigned from Congress in April following several women accusing him of sexual assault, allegations he denied. The controversy ended his bid for California governor and more than a decade in Congress.Voters narrowed down the field of candidates running for this district during the recent June 2 primary election. However, that election is for a two-year term as districts across California shift under new congressional maps under Proposition 50, as passed by voters. The special election on June 16 is to fill the remainder of the vacant term, with nearly a dozen people running.Among the candidates running to fill the remainder of the term are Democrats Aisha Wahab and Melissa Hernandez. Wahab (38.3%) and Hernandez (17.2%) are also the two top vote-getters for this district in the June 2 primary election, according to unofficial results from the California Secretary of State as of Monday, June 15.If one candidate receives the majority of votes, no special general election will be held, according to the California Secretary of State. Otherwise, a special general election will be held on Aug. 18.Nearly half of registered voters in the district are Democrats, according to figures reported by the California Secretary of State ahead of the June 2 primary election.Paris Barraza is a reporter covering Los Angeles and Southern California for the USA TODAY Network.
