Just days after an understanding was announced between the Islamic Republic and the United States to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian state media reported that multiple explosions were heard near the strategic waterway.

Mehr News Agency reported that during the late hours of Monday, June 15, and the early hours of Tuesday, June 16, the sound of three explosions echoed south of Qeshm Island and near the Strait of Hormuz. According to the report, initial assessments suggest that the explosions were “likely carried out for maritime traffic management in the Strait of Hormuz,” though no further details about the nature of the operation were provided.

At the same time, reports circulating on social media and news channels, including Vahid Online, cited local residents who claimed to have heard distant explosion sounds in Sirik County as well.

The development comes as Tehran and Washington prepare to begin the process of reopening the Strait of Hormuz and normalizing maritime transit through the waterway under the terms of the announced understanding. U.S. officials had previously stated that part of implementing the agreement would involve clearing maritime routes and restoring shipping security in the Strait.
