A queer Toronto organization says the arbitrary suspension of its Instagram accounts on the cusp of its biggest event of the year served as a chilling reminder of ongoing censorship by social media giants.
The group, called Something, was gearing up for the Pride edition of its flagship event, a dance party for bisexual people and their allies. It had been promoting the party, BI BI BABY, on social media, sponsored by dating app Tinder, scheduled to take place at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre this Saturday. Something was marking five years of LGBTQ-focused events. Co-founders Kris Harding, Victoria Gubiani and Megan Apa tried out a new marketing feature from Instagram called Trial Reels, which shows an account’s posts to non-followers.
