European Union lawmakers have reached an agreement on a major update to air passenger rights, ending more than a decade of negotiations and introducing new protections for travellers across the bloc.

The deal, agreed between the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, keeps compensation for flight delays of more than three hours, introduces guaranteed free cabin baggage allowances and expands rights for families, children and passengers with disabilities.

The agreement updates rules that have been in place since 2004 and aims to address changes in the aviation market, including the growth of low-cost airlines and the increasing use of extra charges for services that were once included in ticket prices.

Under the agreement, passengers will remain eligible for compensation when flights arrive more than three hours late or are cancelled less than 14 days before departure.
