The man who was fatally shot by police last Tuesday during an operation linked to social media videos showing him allegedly openly carrying and discharging a firearm in Union Hall, San Fernando, was reportedly hiding in the ceiling of a house when investigators arrived at the location.Police said the man, who was suspected of being in possession of an illegal firearm at Cypress Hills, was connected to recent reports of home invasions, larcenies, sexual offences against a minor, firearms offences and shooting incidents in the southern police division.A police report stated that officers received intelligence that indicated that a wanted suspect was at Apartment 3A, Building 32, in Cypress Ridge, Union Hall, San Fernando. Police said that two officers proceeded to the apartment at approximately 12.15 p.m. and they identified themselves to the occupants of the apartment, and advised them of the exercise was being conducted.Police said the suspect, identified as Damani Lewis, 21, was found hiding in the ceiling of the apartment.He subsequently fell through the ceiling and onto the floor of another room in the apartment, and upon seeing the officers, he allegedly pointed a firearm at them.Acting in accordance with the TTPS Use of Force Policy, the two police officersdischarged one round each from their service pistols in the direction of the suspect.The suspect sustained gunshot wounds to the chest and leg, and the firearm fell from his possession onto the floor, police said.The officers secured the weapon and the suspect was conveyed to the San Fernando General Hospital in marked police vehicle.The suspect succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at approximately2.08 p.m.Police said another man, was arrested for the offence of possession of ammunition.The firearm was found to be a Smith and Wesson pistol with its serial number partially obliterated and loaded with twelve rounds of nine millimetre ammunition.
