Screening of passengers is under way at the Coimbatore International Airport as a preventive measure against Ebola virus, Airport Director Mohammad Arif said on Monday.“The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has already issued advisories on the outbreak of Ebola virus in African nations. Based on those advisories, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has issued standard operating procedures and guidelines to us. We are following those guidelines,” he said.Mr. Arif said that in-flight announcement is being made to passengers regarding the virus as per the guidelines. Passengers are also made to fill self declaration forms on the aircraft itself. The passengers are categorised into asymptomatic and symptomatic based upon their declaration, he said.According to him, these forms are handed over to airport health officers (APHO) when an aircraft lands at the airport. The APHOs and the Immigration Department go through the form. If a passenger is found symptomatic, he or she is shifted to the isolation room based on the advice of doctors present at the airport. The passenger will be shifted to the designated hospital for the treatment of the virus through a State-provided ambulance, he said.“No symptomatic case has been reported at Coimbatore airport,” said Mr. Arif.He added that a passenger’s travel history for the past 21 days and his or her contact with a person who travelled to affected countries like Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan during the specific window are also collected in the self declaration form.
