Manchester City has locked down one of the most expensive defenders in football history for the long haul. Joško Gvardiol has signed a new contract with the club that runs through June 2031, keeping the Croatian center-back at the Etihad through what should be the peak years of his career.
Gvardiol will be 29 when this deal expires.
A $90 million investment, now secured
Gvardiol arrived at Manchester City on August 5, 2023, joining from RB Leipzig for a fee of approximately $90 million, placing him among the most expensive defensive signings in the sport’s history.
Under Pep Guardiola, the 23-year-old has established himself as a crucial component of City’s backline. His blend of physical presence, ball-carrying ability, and tactical intelligence made him exactly the kind of modern defender Guardiola’s system demands.
