In South Africa, cerebral palsy (CP) is a major cause of disability in children and reflects the enduring consequences of injury to the foetus or newborn brain
The life of a mother raising a child with a disability is defined by a constant state of paradox.
Society demands that you embody the roles of a tireless warrior and a selfless saint, but the reality is often a solitary journey through the most challenging times.
Society loves to applaud these mothers as "heroes," a comforting label that conveniently excuses the rest of us from offering actual support. But beneath the surface of the heroic narrative lies a much heavier truth.
"People tell me, 'God gives special kids to special parents.' It makes me want to scream. I didn't get chosen because I'm strong. I'm strong because I have no other choice. It feels like society uses praise to avoid giving us actual help,” shared Sarah Ngobese, mother of an autistic teenager.
