The San Francisco 49ers canceled their minicamp last week. Shows how concerned they were about the Myles Garrett trade to the Los Angeles Rams, right?Coach Kyle Shanahan feels good about his team right now, and he usually cuts the final gathering of the offseason short a day anyway. His team is relatively healthy, all the veterans showed up for voluntary workouts and it’s a savvy team that didn’t really need another day of running half-speed without pads. There are still many questions about this team heading into training camp, which begins in the last week of July. The 49ers were the third-best team in their division — and maybe the league — last season despite a rash of injuries. And, even after some nice additions, the 49ers are still No. 3 in the NFC West. The recent trade of the league’s best defensive player, Myles Garrett, to the Rams sent shockwaves throughout the league.“For everybody that’s not in Rams country, it sucks,” 49ers left tackle Trent Williams said.“It’s going to be a really fun challenge,” tight end George Kittle added. In an ideal world, young players like third-round rookie Romello Height and second-year man Connor Colby take a big step and fill the holes at pass rusher and left guard, respectively. And there certainly was a lot of buzz about those two from 49ers coaches and players at offseason workouts. But, in this day and age of instant video validation from bloggers with phones, I would share two points of caution:1. The players are not wearing pads or hitting each other in workouts. This is not really football.2. No coach or player has said publicly that a rookie or second-year player is struggling (or doesn’t look great) at June workouts. This is a time to build up players’ confidence before veterans and the playbook beat it out of them — ideally, only temporarily — in training camp and the preseason.Which brings us, to me, the biggest of five questions facing the 49ers:Am I supposed to believe Height will be rushing the QB on third downs? This is nothing against Height … though I did pause after the 49ers picked him in the third round this spring. Height was 24 last season, when he had his best year in college against much younger players. That breakout also didn’t happen until Texas Tech added two defensive linemen who were drafted before Height (David Bailey and Lee Hunter).Niners defensive line coach Kris Kocurek said two weeks ago he has been impressed with Height’s “speed, athleticism, his explosion on get-off and natural pass-rush ability.”
Five lingering 49ers questions after offseason practices: Will pass rush rely on a rookie?
Among the questions facing the 49ers are familiar ones about their offensive line and the ability to stay healthy.
