We’re on to Phase 3 of the NFL offseason, with the San Francisco 49ers holding organized team activities next Wednesday through Friday, and the players are fired up. And that was just from watching film.Quarterback Brock Purdy thought he recognized a red zone concept when he sat down to watch Tampa Bay Buccaneers film with new receiver Mike Evans. But he was quickly corrected.“I’m so excited because (Evans) sees the game, I feel, like a quarterback does,” Purdy told a crowd at a Dwight Clark Legacy Series event Wednesday night. “Sometimes with skill players, it’s tough because they run their route, ‘Coach taught me, 8 yards, I’m breaking this way or that way.’“But when you get a guy that can see the game like a quarterback and have a feel for it, those are the kind of guys that I think take their game to the next level, and you get a Hall of Famer like Mike Evans.”Evans’ arrival on the practice field will be one of the big things to watch next week. He left Tampa Bay after 12 seasons because he felt he had a better chance to win a Super Bowl with the 49ers.And he is not alone. The 49ers won 12 games and another in the playoffs despite having a roster battered by injuries, then added Evans and defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa to go along with the returns of Fred Warner and Nick Bosa, among others.“Obviously, we have what it takes to go all the way and win it — that’s when we’re at full strength and good to go,” Purdy said. “But even though we are at full strength and full health, that’s not guaranteed. That’s the cool thing about the guys we have in the locker room and organization: No one just sits there and says, ‘Oh, look at our roster and how beautiful it looks.’“Guys are ready to go. When it’s said and done, we want to come back like all these guys and have rings on our fingers and celebrate those key wins and moments with the history of 49ers. That’s what’s on our mind, so we got to do it.”Though Purdy said he thinks second-round rookie De’Zhaun Stribling can have an “instant impact,” it does seem like the 49ers drafted players with an eye to the future rather than 2026. Stribling is fast and has the run-blocking doggedness and skills the 49ers lost when Jauan Jennings misread the free-agent market and left, but it usually takes young receivers a while to get comfortable in Kyle Shanahan’s system. Will that be the case with Stribling? And then there’s third-round pick Romello Height, who ideally will need to come in only on passing downs and rush the quarterback. But at 6 feet 3 and 239 pounds, is Height up for that in his rookie season? The 49ers have roughly $70 million in salary-cap space, so maybe general manager John Lynch will rethink his previous statements that free agent Joey Bosa is too expensive. Or the Niners could kick the tires on cheaper options such as Cameron Jordan or Jadeveon Clowney. There are plenty of other questions as we enter offseason practices:Can a rookie really make a push at LG?Carver Willis played left tackle in college and always knew he would be moving to guard in the pros. But if he wants to start as a fourth-round rookie, he will have to beat out former Miami Dolphins starter Robert Jones and second-year player Connor Colby. To do so, Willis would have to make a very strong impression in the next three weeks, before the players take off until training camp. What does Raheem Morris have in mind at CB?It’s always interesting when a new defensive coordinator brings in new faces, and Raheem Morris had two interesting pickups that largely went under the radar. Former Raiders starters Jack Jones and Nate Hobbs have had some highs and lows in the league, and both signed for cheap. We’ll see whether Morris envisions either pushing Renardo Green for a starting spot. (The 49ers also drafted Ephesians Prysock in the fourth round, but see the above theory that it was with an eye down the road.)This is all assuming outside corner Deommodore Lenoir and slot corner Upton Stout are set, which appears a safe bet considering how much the 49ers are paying Lenoir ($8.9 million cap hit this season) and how much Shanahan and Lynch love Stout, a 2025 third-round pick. Can Marques Sigle take another step?Marques Sigle showed some nice range and tackling abilities as a fifth-round rookie last season, but there were also some loud coverage hiccups, as he couldn’t hang on to a starting job. Veterans Ji’Ayir Brown and Malik Mustapha were also wildly inconsistent. The 49ers are hoping that either two of the three figure something out or Warner and Bosa’s return and an overall improved defense keep the team from putting too much of the load on its safeties.Which punter puts the best foot forward? There is also a competition at backup running back between Jordan James and rookie Kaelon Black, but that pretty much has to wait until the hitting starts at training camp. But it’s never too early to start charting punts. Veteran Corliss Waitman and undrafted rookie Jack Bouwmeester will try to make a great first impression after the team decided to save money and Bengay and move on from 40-year-old veteran Thomas Morstead. Will Brandon Aiyuk show up?The 49ers are in no rush to cut Brandon Aiyuk, their AWOL receiver, so maybe he’ll decide to show up and force their hand. It would make sense, as the threat of getting injured and securing his money after all should terrify the Niners.
