It took a long time for me to become a regular Aldi shopper. I’m not sure quite what clinched it, but it was mostly cost. Aldi has been crowned the Which? Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for a fifth year and is also considered a great value brand.

Since getting to know Aldi, helped by two huge stores opening in my area, I have become a fan of many of its own-brand lines, from wine to yoghurt and lovely salty crackers.

I was previously a Waitrose shopper because of its commitment to treating staff and suppliers ethically. Aldi has brilliant staff, so I assume they are happy-ish with their working conditions, but I do worry how much suppliers might be being squeezed down the line to bring us such low prices.

For me, another huge bonus to shopping in Aldi is the absence of any kind of loyalty system. I make no secret of my hatred of the huge discrepancies in supermarket prices for members and non-members, or how I loathe being pressured to open an app and tap offers every time I shop. I’ll be very disappointed indeed if Aldi ever betrays me and enters the points game.

I don’t tend to buy meat and fish at Aldi, though it does some good steaks and the frozen calamari are a decent freezer snack, but otherwise I can do a full shop.
