EFF president Julius Malema says those complaining about foreign nationals owning spaza shops in townships should instead focus on the broader struggle for control of strategic sectors of the economy, including mines.
He argued that attention is being diverted from what he described as the real issue of economic ownership and transformation.
He was speaking on Sunday at the funeral service of uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) parliamentary deputy chief whip Mzikayise Ntshingila.
Malema questioned why public outrage and mobilisation were directed at spaza shops while there was no similar action targeting ownership of the mining sector, which he described as central to South Africa’s economy.
