Germany just reminded everyone why they’re Germany. A 7-1 thrashing of Curaçao on June 14 opened the 2026 FIFA World Cup’s Group E in emphatic fashion, while Ivory Coast ground out a 1-0 win over Ecuador in the group’s other fixture.
The standings and what they tell us
Here’s where things stand. Germany sit top of Group E with 3 points and a goal difference of +6. Ivory Coast are second, also on 3 points but with a goal difference of just +1. Ecuador occupy third place with 0 points and a -1 goal difference. Curaçao are rooted to the bottom with 0 points and a brutal -6 goal difference.
The format of this expanded 48-team World Cup, hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States, means the top two teams in each group advance to the round of 32. Third-place finishers may also qualify depending on their results relative to other groups. That wrinkle gives Ecuador a lifeline, but Curaçao’s path forward looks significantly steeper after conceding seven in their tournament opener.
