Ecuador occupy third place with 0 points and a -1 goal difference. Curaçao are rooted to the bottom with 0 points and a brutal -6 goal difference.
The format of this expanded 48-team World Cup, hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States, means the top two teams in each group advance to the round of 32. Third-place finishers may also qualify depending on their results relative to other groups. That wrinkle gives Ecuador a lifeline, but Curaçao’s path forward looks significantly steeper after conceding seven in their tournament opener.
