Authorities said 29 migrants were rescued from a dinghy south of Gavdos, Greece’s southernmost island, on Monday morning.
According to the Greek Coast Guard, the vessel was detected by an aerial drone operated by the European Union’s border agency, Frontex.
The migrants were picked up by a Danish-flagged merchant ship and were being transported to the port of Souda on the island of Crete, authorities said.
The rescue comes amid a continuing increase in migrant arrivals on Crete and Gavdos, the two Greek islands closest to the North African coast, which have seen a sharp rise in migrant boats reaching their shores in recent years, many of them departing from Libya.
