Guests at a five-star hotel on the island of Corfu were temporarily evacuated early Monday after thick smoke began rising from the building’s basement, authorities said.
The incident occurred in the Kommeno area, northeast of Corfu Town, when hotel staff detected smoke coming from the lower level of the complex. Employees immediately alerted the fire department and attempted to contain the blaze with fire extinguishers before firefighters arrived.
Within minutes, 15 firefighters and eight fire engines reached the scene and launched an operation to extinguish the fire in the basement.
As a precaution, hotel management ordered the evacuation of the main building, and guests were moved to another part of the resort complex. State broadcaster ERT reported that some guests were relocated while still wearing bathrobes.
