(AP Photo)Germany brushed aside World Cup debutants Curaçao 7-1 in their FIFA World Cup opener on Sunday, but not before the Caribbean nation produced a memorable moment by scoring its first-ever goal in the tournament and holding the four-time champions level for 37 minutes in a spirited first-half display.Curaçao's historic strike stuns GermanyPlaying in their maiden World Cup match, Curaçao became the smallest nation ever to feature at the tournament and enjoyed a dream moment when Livano Comenencia etched his name into history. After Felix Nmecha had given Germany an early lead in the sixth minute, Comenencia fired a left-footed effort through a crowded penalty area in the 21st minute to make it 1-1.The goal was Curaçao's first ever at a FIFA World Cup and briefly raised hopes of an upset as Dick Advocaat's men frustrated the Germans for much of the opening half."Even though it wasn't me, it felt like it was me, it was all of us, the whole island, everybody," Curaçao winger Jearl Margaritha said after the match. "We screamed our lungs out. So we were happy."However, Germany's superior quality eventually told. Defender Nico Schlotterbeck restored the lead in the 38th minute with a header from Nathaniel Brown's corner, ending Curaçao's brave resistance after the sides had been level for 17 minutes.Kai Havertz then converted a penalty in first-half stoppage time after Felix Nmecha was brought down inside the box, giving Germany a commanding 3-1 advantage heading into the break.Havertz double powers Germany to statement victoryJulian Nagelsmann's side wasted little time after the restart. Jamal Musiala extended the lead just two minutes into the second half before Brown got on the scoresheet in the 68th minute.Deniz Undav added another in the 78th minute and Havertz completed his brace with two minutes remaining to cap a dominant performance and hand Germany a six-goal winning margin."We really needed this convincing win," Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said. "We needed this self-confidence. It was there but it definitely grew."Nagelsmann acknowledged that his side faced a tricky challenge against an opponent carrying little pressure."One team has very high expectations and the other one doesn't and that's a bit tricky," he said.Germany's Kai Havertz scores during the World Cup Group E match against Curacao in Houston. "We're in a better spot than we were entering this match."Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, returning to international football after nearly two years, made one save in front of a crowd of 68,021 at Houston's NRG Stadium.Germany next face Ivory Coast in Toronto, while Curaçao will attempt to build on the historic evening when they take on Ecuador in Kansas City.
