Moniepoint Inc., Africa’s leading digital financial services provider, has stepped up efforts to address the continent’s growing shortage of software engineering talent, warning that the gap could trigger significant economic losses if left unresolved.

The fintech unicorn made this known following the graduation of the recent second cohort of its DreamDevs Bootcamp in Lagos, a flagship training programme designed to build a pipeline of homegrown engineering talent to support Africa’s expanding digital economy.

The initiative comes against the backdrop of a widening global shortage of software developers, estimated to reach 85 million by 2030, with potential economic losses of about $5.5tn. The trend could slow digital transformation efforts, particularly in emerging markets such as Nigeria and other African economies already struggling with skills shortages.

Nigeria and several African countries are scaling up investments in digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence, but experts warn that the lack of mid-to-senior-level engineering talent remains a critical bottleneck for sustained growth in the tech sector.
