Manchester United’s first major signing under new head coach Michael Carrick is getting his physical in New York. Éderson, the 26-year-old Brazilian midfielder, is undergoing medical tests today as part of a £35 million move from Atalanta, with performance-related add-ons potentially pushing the total to £39 million.
The deal itself
The agreement between United and Atalanta values Éderson at £35 million upfront, roughly €40.5 million. An additional £4 million in performance-based add-ons could sweeten the pot for the Italian club.
Éderson joined Atalanta in July 2022, with his contract running through June 2027. A stalled transfer to Atlético Madrid opened the door for United to swoop in. The expected contract is a four-year deal with an option for a fifth year, potentially keeping Éderson at Old Trafford until 2030. Transfer completion is targeted for early July 2026.
The New York medical is a logistical quirk. Éderson was recently called up to Brazil’s World Cup squad after a teammate’s injury, which placed him stateside. Rather than fly him back to Manchester for the standard battery of tests, United arranged examinations where the player already was.
