The New York Knicks could clinch the NBA Finals on the same night, potentially leading to a large celebration.A previous post-game celebration resulted in 56 detentions and 10 injured police officers.A concert with pop-rock band 5 Seconds of Summer will continue at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night with heightened security. The venue, home to the NBA's New York Knicks, could also be the site of an impromptu championship celebration if the team clinches the NBA Finals.The Knicks, who won Game 4 of the NBA Finals on June 10 in historic fashion, travel to San Antonio up three games to one in a best of seven series; if they defeat the Spurs it would be the organization's first title since 1973. Both games hosted by the Knicks in the Finals have been attended by a star-studded fans, including Taylor Swift, Jerry Seinfeld, Fat Joe, Timothée Chalamet and Adam Sandler. During the playoffs, for both home and away games, local fans have spilled on to 7th Avenue outside of the Garden to celebrate. After the Game 4 win, in which the Knicks came back after being down by 29 points, 10,000 fans joined the exiting sold-out crowd at the Garden to celebrate on the street.On June 11 the NYPD announced that 56 people were detained and 10 officers were injured in that celebration, which authorities described as "destructive." Police said people lit fireworks, flipped over taxis and climbed on patrol cars.For Game 3 of the NBA Finals, which was attended by President Trump, the NYPD set up a perimeter around the Garden that ran two avenues across and five blocks long. Despite the president not attending Game 4, authorities maintained the same perimeter.According to the Madison Square Garden account on X, the NYPD will once again implement a "frozen zone" around the venue, where entry will require a valid concert ticket. Anyone attempting to enter the zone will also be screened.The Garden also advises that doors will open one hour earlier than scheduled at 6 p.m. and that following the show's conclusion, fans should exit the venue and "frozen zone" immediately.Perhaps complicating transportation matters, nearby MetLife Stadium will be hosting its first FIFA World Cup 2026 match between Brazil and Morocco on Saturday. Many fans in the New York City area are expected to take NJ Transit to the game, which runs directly under Madison Square Garden in Penn Station.NYPD says that they are expecting, "tens of thousands" of people in the area on Saturday evening.How the NBA, NHL playoffs are impacting arena concertsFor away games throughout the playoffs, the Knicks have held watch parties inside and outside the "World's Most Famous Arena." Despite an ongoing feud between New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Knicks owner James Dolan over permits, capacity and security, the Knicks will host three watch parties at different venues: Central Park, Radio City Music Hall, and a plaza outside MSG, which has been permitted for 3,000 people. All parties are ticketed.Inside, it will be all 5SOS, the quartet from Australia with hits like "Amnesia," "She Looks So Perfect" and the top 10 "Youngblood."The NBA and NHL playoffs both run through May and June and have already led to a few scheduling conflicts between arenas and music artists. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band were forced to postpone a show three weeks in Philadelphia due to the playoff schedules of both the NBA's 76ers and NHL's Flyers. Meanwhile, Game 4 of the NBA Finals postponed a show previously scheduled at MSG with Forrest Frank. The Christian pop singer sat courtside at the basketball game and headlined the venue the following evening.If fans of the platinum-selling group don't feel like navigating additional security protocols and potential crowds, or they don't want to miss what could be an epic NBA Finals ender, fear not: 5 Seconds of Summer plays a second show at MSG the following night.
