Switzerland’s Breel Embolo scored from the penalty spot in the 18th minute to give his side the lead against Qatar in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group B opener in Santa Clara, California on June 13.
The penalty was awarded after Qatari goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada fouled Swiss midfielder Remo Freuler, with the referee confirming the call through a VAR review before pointing to the spot.
What happened on the pitch
Embolo stepped up and converted cleanly, marking his 24th goal in 86 international appearances for Switzerland.
The goal proved to be the match’s only score, giving Switzerland all three points in their tournament opener.
