But few people know that the pioneer of fashion photography was Luxembourg-born Edward Steichen, a celebrated photographer, painter, curator, designer, and horticulturist whose influence helped define modern visual culture.
Steichen images for the magazine Art et Décoration in 1911 are considered the first modern fashion photographs to be published. From 1923 to 1938, Steichen served as chief photographer for the Condé Nast magazines Vogue and Vanity Fair, designating him the “greatest living portrait photographer”
