Kadettri, a village under Ward 52 of Nagercoil Corporation, is in dire need of basic infrastructure facilities such as street lights and bus services. The locality falls under the added area of the Corporation. For several years now, residents have been demanding street lights and bus services, along with other essential civic amenities.Three months ago, The Hindu reported about the infrastructure gaps in the locality despite its merger with the Corporation. At the time, former Mayor R. Mahesh said that measures would be taken for installation of street lights and introduction of bus services. The residents of Kadettri primarily use the route through Kakkanpudhur to board buses from Parakkai and other services. However, only street light was installed along the route, and residents claim that it is often not illuminated. In contrast, a couple of street lights were installed along the Kadettri-Thengamputhoor route, which, they say, is rarely used for their daily commute.“We have been demanding street lights and bus facilities for years, yet no concrete action has been taken to implement them,” Thana Ganga, a resident, said. The Corporation has installed a couple of lights on Thengamputhoor route, which is not commonly used by school children and other residents of the locality, he added.Another major concern of residents is the lack of bus services. They have been demanding at least three bus trips from Nagercoil, saying that even a government mini bus service would meet their needs. “Students and elders are forced to walk nearly 2.5 km to Parakkai to board a bus,” said Abilash, another resident.A government bus service to the village in the morning, evening and night would be of great help to the residents, he added..Responding to the concerns, a Corporation engineer said that two months ago around 90 street lights were allotted for Ward 52. Of them, nine were reportedly installed in Kadettri. Based on feasibility, measures would be taken to install street lights between Kakkanpudhur and Kadettri.A senior official from Nagercoil Corporation told The Hindu that the issue regarding the absence of bus facility would be brought to the attention of the Collector and necessary measures would be taken.
