Olympiakos has won the European crown in women’s water polo for a fourth time, after topping the Champions League Final Four on Friday in Malta.
The Greek champion defeated Spain’s Mataro in the semifinal with a 14-12 score on Wednesday.
Then in Friday’s final it faced Hungarian powerhouse Ferencvaros, in a tight game that ended in a 14-14 draw.
The title was decided in the shootout, with Olympiakos netting three times and its keeper, Dutch international Britt van den Dobbelsteen, saving all three penalties taken by Ferencvaros, for a 17-14 triumph of the Reds.
On the other hand, the men’s team of Olympiakos could not make the final, as it went down to Italy’s Pro Recco 19-13 in Thursday’s semi, at the Final Four, also taking place in Malta.
